1873 - 1887
The day Joseph Conrad
met Captain Andersen the 'Old Oriental Hotel' was still there, to
the left of the elephant new one, and it was still used as a Club-room.
The luxury of the hotel surprised and worried
Conrad as he thougnt that a room there would be rather costly for
his meagre salary, but Andersen reassured him. After all, Andersen
had been a sailor

And nowhere is this more evident than in The
Oriental Suites.
The suites have, in many cases, been named
after famous authors who have resided and at the hotel-Conrad,
Maugham, Michener and Greene. Others are named after the ships of
Conrad's time that lay at anchor in the river opposite the hotel
Each suite is in dividually furnished and
decorated to reflect the origin of its name. |
