The Legend of the Oriental Bangkok
Why the Oriental can maintain their championship during the past 20 years as most honored hotel of the word. It's no doubt because of the good service mind and the right vision of the GM, Mr. Kurt Wachtveitl, a graduate of Lausanne Hotel School in Switzerland and also a degree in Philosophy at the University of Madrid and History of Art and Literature at the Dante Alighiere School in Rome.Mr. Wachtveitl has been working with the Oriental for over 30 years and appointed as General Manager of the Oriental, Bangkok since he was 30. He may be the only GM of the world who works closely with his guests and staff by inspecting the hotel lobby almost evening, after office hours to greet his guests and overlooking the hotel staff services by himself. Moreover, the Oriental, Bangkok with 290 guests rooms and they have almost 900 staff on their payroll. So we can imagine, service ratio to be one rooms will be taken cared by 3 staff, so it's rather difficult for the other hotel to compete with the Oriental's excellent services. Tuk Tuk Gang at the Emerald Buddha and the Grand Palace
Be aware of the Tuk Tuk Gang when you disembarque from the long tail boat pier for visiting the Emerald Buddha or Wat Pra Kaew. The gang will tell you that the Temple and the Grand Palace is temporary closed for 2-3 hr. and then they will offer you a few hour ride for the City Tour. What you should do is not to believe them as it's normally untrue. Pls. proceed to the Temple and the Palace and then at the gate you will see a sign "Open daily from 08:30 hr.". 7% VAT Refund for Shopping in Thailand When tourists purchase merchandise worth over some amount, the 7 % VAT will be refunded at the airport when departing Bangkok. In some big shops in Bangkok, they will only prepare document for tourists on request only. So in order to make sure that you get all the necessary document from the shop to claim VAT refund, you need to ask them every time on the Tax Refund.
